1. the part of a harness that passes around a horse's rump, enabling him to push back or hold back a vehicle.
2. a smoke pipe connecting one or more boilers with a chimney.
3. a stout rope which secures a gun to a ship's side and checks recoil.
4. the parts forming the breech of a gun.
